RIAA Sues Fans For Remembering Lyrics Print E-mail
Digg!

The RIAA has recently filed lawsuits against 10 fans for remembering lyrics to their favorite songs and the numbers are expected to reach into the millions. A representative for the RIAA states that “In today's temperamental music market we just can’t afford anymore losses. We can’t have people running around being able to call up lyrics at will. Next thing you know they will sing it out loud and all their friends will get it stuck in their heads and before you know it the lyrics have spread like wildfire. We see no difference between this issue and peer to peer file sharing.”

The RIAA has been on an ongoing mission to punish anyone who desires their product. Between shutting down many MP3 and P2P sites and their cease and desist orders sent to sites featuring lyrics and sheet music for today’s popular music they are on track to alienating the very fans they so desperately need.

Lawyers representing the RIAA have been lobbying congress to pass new bills that will cover a number of problems plaguing the music industry. One such bill will put a tighter grasp on performance rights and royalties paid to artists and labels. Below is a brief outline of these new amendments.

• Humming more than 3 bars of any copyrighted song is a clear violation. (this also includes whistling)

• Tapping out the beat of more than 4 bars of any copyrighted song will also be considered a violation.

• Sketching the logo or lyrics to any trademarked logo or copyrighted song on a notebook will be considered a violation.

• If your pulse matches the tempo of any copyrighted song it will be considered a violation.

The RIAA hopes to get these bills passed and also be given the authority to assemble a task force to enforce any of the new laws passed.

A statement issued from the RIAA states that “Although these seem like extreme measures to protect copyrighted material it will insure that fans can enjoy the sounds of music for years to come.”
